Barbash and Castaing-Taylor spent years in the Absaroka-Beartooth following the last band of sheep driven through the range. The film contains almost no staged speech. Its subtitles instead record weather and the odd radio broadcast, alongside men swearing at animals from a distance.

The subtitle work includes the French and Spanish passes for the international release, alongside the frame composition. The film came out of the Film Study Center at Harvard, which also produced Songs from the Tundra.
