Super Death Bowl

author, 2013–2017

This arena shooter, a runner-up at the UTA Hollywood Hackathon, turns spectators into active players by letting them watch from their phones and pay to drop health, ammo, walls, and hostile drones into the match.

Twelve players fight it out in an arena on a PC while the audience watches on their phones. The audience can reach into the match. For money, a spectator drops a health pack or a crate of ammunition to a favorite, throws up a wall in front of them, or sets a hostile drone on someone they dislike.

League of Legends and Twitch built enormous crowds whose only permitted activity was to watch. Super Death Bowl gives that crowd a way to spend on the match itself.

The first version took runner-up at the UTA Hollywood Hackathon in 2013. A 2016 rebuild made it a shooter, with a phone screen showing the arena from above as a live map to tap and drop things into. It was shown at StartMIT.
